BUCKET LIST TOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANTS

Restaurent's in Yellowknife

As a well-travelled individual with an immense appreciation for all foods, culture, and cooking, I know just how important quality culinary experiences are to your overall travel experience. With over fifty dining choices the city of Yellowknife has an abundance of fast food, fine dining, ethnic restaurants and local eateries. The following are a list of my personal favorites. Each of these restaurants are family and/or operator-owned. Hours may vary, and some may be closed on weekends. Please check directly with the individual restaurants to confirm times of operation.

When reviewing the information below, it is important to remember this is not a local restaurant guide, but a list of our recommendations based on service, attitude, quality of the dining experience and consistency.

Birchwood Café

Birchwood Cafe Yellowknife

An absolute gem located in downtown Yellowknife, a visit to this Indigenous-owned coffee shop is a must. The café is a labour of Love and the brainchild of Jawah Bercier. (Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneur Award for the NWT at the Arctic Indigenous Investment Conference.) Jawah is shy about her accomplishment, but very deserving.

Birchwood offers an excellent selection of coffees and teas along with unique and delicious breakfast, lunch and sweet items. All meals are prepared in the café, featuring a variety of hearty dishes and lighter fare. The bannock bacon and egger is the best breakfast sandwich in town. The cinnamon buns are very hard to pass up. There are daily specials, along with simple but delish ready-made sandwiches, muffins, and ever so good sweets.

This small cozy café offers in-house dining and operates an outdoor patio in the summer months. The restaurant is within walking distance from the hotels and bed and breakfasts that are located near the downtown core. If you plan to visit, keep in mind they are not open weekends. We also recommend, if you are taking a hike, or want to plan a picnic lunch – this is the perfect spot to grab something to take with you. Currently open Monday – Friday for breakfast and lunch. Contact the restaurant directly to confirm hours of operation and for further information.

Bullock’s Bistro

 Bullocks yellowknife

Considered by many (including locals) to be the most iconic restaurant in Yellowknife, a visit to Bullock’s Bistro is an absolute must. Bullocks was conceived by Sam and Renada Bullock, some 30 years ago. They are located in Old Town’s very first Trading Store. (Weaver and Devore). The restaurant is currently owned by locals Mark Elson and his wife Jo-Ann Martin, who carry on the tradition of greatness.
Bullocks offers the very best fish from Great Slave Lake, and Char imported from the Arctic Ocean. In addition to the delicious ways they prepare a variety of fish dishes (deep fried, pan fried, grilled) they also offer a tasty chowder and a bison steak dinner. They bake all breads served in house. In addition, they are home to their famous fish sauce, which you can now take home with you.
Bullock’s accepts reservations for groups of 6 or more. If you are joining us for the Cozy Cabin Tour, we suggest a nice early dinner or late lunch. The restaurant may not be as busy during these times, and you will be hungry again by the time we serve you a late-night snack of local fish chowder and bannock at the cabin. Contract the restaurant directly to confirm hours of operation and other information.

The Cliff Café

This quaint restaurant is definitely Yellowknife’s very best kept secret. Award winning head chef Chris Souboules has an abundance of talent, creativity and culinary flare. He is truly a talent in his art. Located in our Legislative Assembly, chef Chris caters to our government officials and provides the catering for all functions at the facility. To our good fortune, he has a little café that is open to the public. While the menu is small, it does not disappoint. He has created a number of specialty items including local fish which he creates a unique daily gourmet delight and his beef brisket is do die for. Known for their generous portions, you will most likely need to ask for a take-way container that you can enjoy later hot or cold.
The restaurant is open to the public for lunch from Monday to Friday. To avoid the busy times, we recommend enjoying the guided tour of our beautiful legislative assembly and then stopping into the café for an early lunch. The restaurant does not accept reservations. Please contact the restaurant to confirm hours of operation and other information.

Korea House

Korea House Yellowknife

This family owned and operated restaurant specializes in authentic Korean cuisine, served hot, fast and with a smile. Some of the most popular items include chicken or pork bulgogi (broiled meat with rice and stir-fried vegetables) Japchae (stir fried crystal noodles) and Goon Mandu (fried dumplings). I suggest trying their combo box which includes one main dish, three side dishes and steamed rice.
Depending on your tolerance for spicy food, they can prepare the dishes mild or hot. For those that like spicy food, be sure to ask for an order of their Kimchi which is prepared using their special recipe. During the COVID-19 pandemic they have opted to provide take-out service only, but typically there are a number of tables and chairs in the facility for in-person dining. They are typically open from Monday – Saturday for lunch and dinner. Contract the restaurant directly to confirm hours of operation.

NWT Brewing Company / The Woodyard

Opened in 2015, this family-owned microbrewery features a number of craft beers served on tap. Be sure to try their Kicksled Cream Ale which won a bronze medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards. Other local favorites include the Ragged Pine Pale Ale, Bug Light ISA and Turbid Witbier. All beers are available in 16 or 22 ounce glasses. With over a dozen options to choose from, I recommend selecting the flight, which includes a smaller sampling of four of the featured beers on tap.

Their dining facility known as The Woodyard provides a vibrant, fun atmosphere to enjoy their pub style food specialities including chicken wings, whitefish tacos, truffle fries, smoked brisket flatbread, and brewhouse mac n cheese. Their shack burger is also a popular menu item and considered to be one of the best burgers in town. The brewery also offers offsite sales featuring a variety of local beer. Be sure to check out their Brew Pub swag including ball caps and t-shirts, glassware and other fun items.

The Woodyard is typically open for dinner on Mondays – Thursdays and for lunch and dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. You must be 19 years or older to visit the restaurant, except on Saturdays when it is open to family dining. Please contact the restaurant to confirm hours of operation and other information.

Savannah’s

If you are looking for a unique dining experience, I highly recommend you visit Savannah’s. This family-owned restaurant specializes in east-African cuisine. Their tasty menu features samosas, curried goat, Somali thin steak, butter chicken, local fish, vegetarian dishes and a small selection of western-style items. For those dining with children under the age of 12, I recommend the kids’ menu which includes a mini burger, chicken strips, grilled cheese sandwich and spaghetti. All kids meals come with a juice box and a special sundae treat.
Typically open weekdays from 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM for lunch and from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM for dinner. Closed on week-ends and holidays. Please contact the restaurant directly to confirm hours of operation and other information.
